I used to play Bin Weevils on my account called bin1932 and stopped around 2016-ish. It used to be a great game and I have fond memories of playing it over the years. The game is nothing but dead today - each server is almost completely empty and the game barely has a community anymore, such as basically every BW blog being inactive or shut.

Bin Weevils is a children's massively multiplayeronline game. Developed by UK-based gaming studio 55pixels Ltd (formerly known as Bin Weevils Limited), the website was first launched on 7th May 2003 as 'coming soon'. A few months later, the game was launched by Nickelodeon and Prism Entertainment Ltd as a 2D game on the Nickelodeon website,^[1][2][3] alongside the short animation clips which appeared on television^[4]. Bin Weevils re-released independently in 2007 with a fresh new look which was a re-design and the new 3D aspect of the game. Although still partnered with Nickelodeon UK, the game developed its own website (e.g. own blog for news).^[5]

Gameplay[edit]

Bin Weevils is based around the theme of the real creatures, weevils. Players can make, customise and control their own character. The game is set in a bin-like environment with numerous places being designed specifically for this theme (e.g. Kip's Scrapyard, Peel's Park, Ink's Orange Peel) with items you would find usually in a bin, such as mould and orange peels. Players have their own 'nest' which they can change the colour of, and can customise the rooms. Players can choose to upgrade the nest to all 8 rooms by using the Mulch currency. Players can choose to decorate their rooms by buying items from the 'Shopping Mall' and placing the items in their rooms accordingly. The items can also be sold at one of the locations in the game if the player doesn't want the item anymore for Mulch currency. The nest consists of a private cinema, a plaza (both require membership) and a nest generator. Depending on how low the nest generator level is, the brighter or darker the nest gets. All players also have a 'Bin Card' in their nest, which they can stamp every day to receive a reward such as vouchers for hats, plants, XP and more.

The main navigation of the game is the Map which players can use to travel to different areas of the game. The map has had many changes in the past due to re-designs. There are several multiplayer games which players can play to earn currency ('Mulch') and experience points ('XP'). There are also many educational games such as the 'Daily Brain Strain' which players can visit daily to test their knowledge by a series of maths, geography and puzzle questions. Players who participate in the 60 seconds can receive Mulch and XP based on how well they have done. Players can also enter codes to receive rewards.

All users have a garden in their nest, in which they can buy plants from the 'Garden Shop' and plant and then harvest for in-game money ('Mulch') and experience points ('XP'). The user can save the currency or buy more plants and the XP contributes to levelling up towards the next level. There are 80 levels in total but more are often added. Moreover, paying players can buy a virtual pet known as a 'Bin Pet'. The Bin Pet has its own profile and a bed. Players can feed their Bin Pet and make it perform tricks and play mini-games. Non-paying players can also own a virtual pet, but for 24 hours. This feature is called 'Pet-For-A-Day and was first announced on January 17th, 2014.^[6]

Membership[edit]

Bin Tycoon is an addition to Bin Weevils. Users with a premium membership earn a monthly dosh salary which progressively gets higher depending on how many months you have the membership for. With this salary, the paying player can purchase hats for their character, items and clothing for their virtual pet, write magazines and much more to do. The currency 'Dosh' was added in 2012 and it replaced the high Mulch prices in many areas, although it requires payment with real currency. However, from time to time players can participate in puzzles, watch advertisements and enter codes to earn the currency. In the early states of the game, it was possible to become a paying member for 1 month via an SMS text but was removed in 2013. Players could also purchase Mulch from the membership page until 2013, the highest price was £14.99 for 75,000 Mulch.^[7] However, players can still earn the currency in the game as it is the main currency for a lot of activities. Players can play the multiplayer games to earn the currency, or enter codes, etc. Dosh is the only currency to purchase on the membership page at present. In 2015, Bin Weevils mentioned that 90% of the site's content was free to play and that 90% of their audience were non-paying players. ^[8]

Child Safety[edit]

Bin Weevils has been certified by the kidSAFE Seal Program.^[9]As well as this, Bin Weevils claim to have a very strict moderation system. Players can type any message they want but the filter has pre-approved words to prevent players from sharing any type of personal information or explicit language. According to the Bin Weevils' support page, the moderation process is based on a ticket system in which whenever a user goes against the rules, they are warned and a time limit goes onto the account which can range from 24 hours to permanent.^[10]Another feature which reflects on child safety is reporting another player and choosing to ignore them via the profile so the player can't see their messages once done so.^[11] Although the strict chat filter is in place, players still have found ways to type what they wish by mixing up letters and describing it.

Merchandise[edit]

As Bin Weevils popularity spiralled a few years ago, they decided to enter a license agreement with toy company Character Options to create a line of merchandise based off the game.^[12] The merchandise consisted of a magazine which Bin Weevils launched in February 2012 to celebrate their 2011 BAFTA Award^[13], a trading card game which launched in June 2012^[14], a clothing set, backpacks, figurines and toys which launched in October 2012 and books^[15]. An album titled 'Bin Weevils' with Sony in December 2012.^[16] A competition was held relating to the album which four children could be picked to write a song for the album. ^[17] The album was launched on 29th July 2013 with a tracklist of 12 children songs. In November 2013, Bin Weevils partnered up with WellChild to help raise money for sick children in the UK. Users could buy a Bin Weevils T-shirt and choose a design they wanted on the clothing and 20% of each sale would go to WellChild.

Weevil World[edit]

In May 2017, the company released a beta version of a new game named 'Weevil World' which at the time was only exclusive to paying members. The beta ended and the game was released a month later to all players. ^[18]The game is a multiplayer Unity game for mobile devices and desktop and allows players to cross-play between Weevil World and Bin Weevils using the same account. According to the Weevil World support page, the game is an 'expansion' to Bin Weevils. Players can customise their weevil character when signing up and can control their character around the island. Players can buy clothes for the character, level up, collect the currency (coins and gems) to buy decorations for their home (nest) in the game and can invite players to their home to receive a nest rating.^[19]

In 2019, 55pixels announced that the game will be going through a re-design with some features being removed, some locations and mini-games not being available and the currency being replaced with coins and gems (was previously Mulch and Dosh, the currency that was used on Bin Weevils).^[20]

Reception[edit]

In 2015, both Bin Weevils and Moshi Monsters were told to change the wording of their in-app advertisements by the Advertising Standards Authority, who said that the adverts pressured players to buy items inside the game.^[21] 55pixels, the company that operates the game, said that 'as soon as [we] were made aware of the complaint made to the Advertising Standards Authority about a potential breach, and once we had understood the area for concern, we changed all our membership pages to comply with their recommendations. [The ASA] subsequently upheld the complaint about the original wording but referenced that we now complied, in the text of the ruling.'

The game has also received criticism by many players, with many criticising the lack of a 'bin-like environment' in the game and the 'bad influence' for children.^[22][23]

Bin Weevils has also been criticised for the lack of safety in the game due to exploiters writing explicit language on the game in the areas where other players can also see the bad language. In 2016, the magazine feature in the game was exploited and Bin Weevils received criticism from other players due to the lack of safety.^[24] Bin Weevils had to remove some of the features in the game such as the public leaderboards and making it friends-only due to exploiters.^[25] A popular feature called the 'Photo Studio' was removed due to exploits in 2016. Players could use third party tools to manipulate the backdrop of the area to anything they wanted (one instance was a pornographic image inside the frame which players could see if invited to a nest). Bin Weevils claim that the feature was removed due to an 'identified error'.^[26] The feature has not been added back since.^[27]

Data Breaches[edit]

In September 2014, Bin Weevils suffered a huge data breach which resulted in 20 million accounts having unauthorised access.^[28] Accounts, email addresses and hashed passwords were later leaked online. Bin Weevils were notified of the security vulnerability and took the website down for a week to perform some security checks.^[29] On the 12th September 2014, a login captcha was added to the homepage which users had to verify before they could continue.^[30]

In July 2017, Bin Weevils suffered yet another huge data breach which accounts and personal information were leaked online. During the July breach, an unauthorised post was published to the Bin Weevils news page stated that the game was closing but was later taken down immediately.

Awards[edit]

In 2009, Bin Weevils was nominated for the BAFTA Awards. In 2011, Bin Weevils won the BAFTA Award for 'Best Website'. To celebrate, they released Nest Items for their players. In late 2012, Bin Weevils once again won the BAFTA Awards.^[31] In late 2013, Bin Weevils won for the third time for 'Best Website', and again in 2014.^[32] Bin Weevils was shortlisted in the games category in 2015.
