Hi
There are different types of speed cameras. The most common variety takes a picture of the back of your vehicle (incl number plate). However, as new cameras are being put in, this new model takes a photo from in front of your car (incl your front number plate this time), but also showing fairly clearly who was driving.
Out of stater here. I passed through Sioux City in mid to late July 2018, northbound on I-29.
This week I receive a speeding ticket, courtesy of the Sioux City PD, administered by a private company. As a civil infraction, it will not go on my license or impede my ability to be insured, but it will supposedly go to collections if not paid.
A quick google search reveals that Iowa State legislature passed a bill that makes speed camera tickets issued in the state of Iowa after July 1st, 2018 null and void. How is the Sioux City PD legal in sending these out?
I live far, far away so showing up in person to fight it is not economical.
I am not nominating another driver (same household) but the video and pictures provided do not identify me as the driver.
My sole option seems to pay or let it go to collections, and fight it there. I'm also of the type that doesn't just take shit like this lying down. Don't get me wrong, if I were speeding and were pulled over by a LEO who has me dead to rights, it's cut and dried. Pay the fine and move on with life. Speeding cameras though, not so much. I feel as if I'm being denied my right to due process and they're just counting on my time being worth more than theirs.
My question is; have any locals received a ticket after 1 July 2018 and have any of them gone to collection?
I'm wondering if any collection company is going to want to touch this as the PD is issuing tickets in violation of state law.
Best,
EFL
